To change your name on a ration card in Karnataka, first update your Aadhaar card with the correct name. For spelling corrections, no Gazette is needed — just update Aadhaar first. For legal name changes (marriage, personal reasons), you must get a Karnataka State Gazette notification first. Karnataka's Gruhalakshmi scheme sends a monthly benefit to the woman who is the head of the family, the yajamani, on the ration card. Because of this, many families now change the head of family to a woman, or transfer it between members, for example from a mother-in-law to a daughter-in-law.
This is a head of family change, not a name change. It is done through the same amendment process on the Ahara Karnataka portal or at a Bangalore One / Karnataka One centre, with Aadhaar-based biometric authentication of the members involved. The Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs allows the head of family to be changed so the household can avail the Gruhalakshmi benefit.
